At this year’s graduation ceremony, Sequoia Grove Charter Alliance CEO Julie Haycock proudly presented the 2025 Founder’s Award, an honor that recognizes one exceptional graduate each year who embodies the values of grit, resilience, and personal growth.
"When we created the Founder’s Award," said Haycock, "our goal was to highlight a student who not only pursued academic excellence, but also demonstrated determination and courage in achieving their personal goals. These are students who rise above challenges and reach for more—with the support of their families, teachers, and community."
This year’s recipient, Luca Bortoletto, is a shining example of these values.
Nominated by his homeschool teacher, Jenna Clifton, Luca’s story is one of relentless dedication, purposeful leadership, and deep curiosity. Throughout his years with Sequoia Grove, Luca has:
-
Earned the rank of Eagle Scout
-
Completed college-level welding courses
-
Excelled in the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps, earning the prestigious Theodore Roosevelt Youth Medal and rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer
"Luca is the embodiment of dedication and purpose-driven leadership," shared Clifton. "His achievements reflect not only his skills, but also his strong character and commitment to serving others."
His adventures have taken him from advanced dive training to exploring maritime history in Australia, and his service work includes impactful projects such as restoring the rose garden at the Aerospace Museum and building structures to benefit both his family and community.
Whether pursuing hands-on skills, leading peers, or expanding his horizons through travel and education, Luca’s initiative and integrity have been a consistent hallmark of his journey.
To honor his achievements and support his continued growth, Luca was awarded a $1,000 check from the Sequoia Grove Family. The award serves not only as recognition of his accomplishments, but also as encouragement to keep reaching for his dreams.
We also extend heartfelt congratulations to this year’s Founder’s Award nominees: Reese Rudolph, Valerie Jacob, Spencer Hall, Kylie Makishima, and Evanee Nootenboom. Each of these students has shown remarkable perseverance, growth, and strength during their educational journey with Sequoia Grove. We are proud to celebrate their achievements and the impact they’ve made in our school community.
Congratulations, Luca! We can’t wait to see where your next chapter takes you!
